Writer Living at the Crossroads

A magpie-like collection of pursuits are what make up my "working career." While this choice has precluded any form of singular success, the color-filled journey, in the midst of raising and caring for my family, has afforded me an enriching and entertaining life. I have learned much and met many, many wonderful people along the way.

After all that exploration, today I find myself an options trader for money, an angel investor for entrepreneurial excitement.

And above all — a creative. For love.

“For those who find they have many paths from which to choose, perhaps it would be best to build a house on the crossroads. Then take a few steps on any of the roads the heart desires. With a house on the crossroads, one has the joy of meeting various caravans that pass through pursuing different paths.”

The Colossus

Published · Astor & Blue, 2015

After a short period of mourning my first novel's rejection, I started my next: The Colossus is a historical/present-day mystery peppered with humor and romance. Growing up I'd come to learn about the sordid past of Bayer AG where my dad had worked for much of his career. Their connections to the Nazi party and Zyklon B, as well as the fascinating history of how they created Aspirin, inspired this novel.

Synopsis

On a pharmaceutical research mission in 1935, Dr. Samuel Rosen uncovers a pill from the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. The pills are a source of intrigue for the Nazis, who believe they may hold the key to immortality. When they test the pills on the Jewish prisoners of Krippenwald labor camp, a highly contagious retrovirus begins to spread.

Over the next several decades, the virus reaches pandemic proportions, but due to its stealthy nature, nobody knows it's happening. Nobody, except Berliner Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Rosen's ex-employer.

Fast forward to the year 2000 in Chicago. Dr. Rosen's granddaughter, Max, is living a quiet life until an old friend of her grandfather's knocks on her door. Berliner Pharmaceuticals is after the research on the pill, and they may be responsible for Max's father's puzzling death. Desperate for answers, Max travels across the continents to unlock her grandfather's secrets. She soon learns two things: there is a reason these pills were kept secret for thousands of years, and Berliner will stop at nothing to keep the research under wraps.

The Coconut Bank

Waiting in the Wings

My first novel, The Coconut Bank, was based on my father's challenging growing-up years and young life in India and later, Russia. "Beautiful but too quiet," the publishers said, and didn't pick it up.

The story has no expiration date, however, and so while that manuscript waits in the wings, it stays what it had at first aimed to be — a glimpse for the next generations into where they came from.

Film

As a teen, I fancied being a Hollywood actress. When I revealed this to a friend, "You're pretty," she said, "but not that pretty." I took that piece of feedback to heart but remained determined to find a different toehold in the business.

Associate Producer — credited as Business Researcher

While getting my MBA at Case Western Reserve University, I persuaded a local documentary filmmaker to hire me to write a business plan for her debut feature, Nightowls Of Coventry, and received an Associate Producer credit as payment.

Sadly, prospective investors remained unimpressed with my plan and as is usual in the business, it took several years to raise funds and make the film. When it finally came out, my credit was boiled down to business researcher, the very last name in the rolling credits. Still, I'm amazed even to have been mentioned after all that time.

Beyond the Soul

Co-Writer & Co-Producer

In 2002-ish, my then producing partner and I put up a notice on a Columbia College student board offering to act as Producers for a student film. That notice brought us the opportunity to serve as co-writers and co-producers on Beyond The Soul.

What started as a small $30,000 film soon ballooned to a more ambitious project with a budget ten times that. Several exciting steps and mis-steps later, the film was made.

The story of the making of BTS could one day become a film on the lines of Living in Oblivion, because in hindsight, a lot of the pain we suffered while bringing it to life is hilarious. What's more, it remains an experience I will always cherish.

Despite its glaring shortcomings, BTS managed to win a couple of indie film awards. And one of the film's producers even sold it to a DVD distributor.

The Last Victim

Development Director, Immortal Thoughts

That plucky producer who sold BTS was Naveen Chattapuram. Naveen launched his own film company and years later, directed his debut feature, The Last Victim, starring Ali Larter, Ron Perlman, and Ralph Ineson.

I visited him as soon as I heard about the film to congratulate him on his success. There sitting in his office, I found the same unassuming young man I had worked with nearly two decades prior. I told him I'd love to work with him again.

Other Ventures

To live the life of a creative, the challenge always remains to find ways to make money. Since I was determined not to follow a traditional career path, I earned my keep over the years with entrepreneurial consulting work, teaching online business classes, and a long stint as part-time managing director of a non-profit.

Along the way, I started a couple businesses that didn't pan out for one reason or another.

When the last one had to end after COVID hit, I felt defeated, convinced that I had wasted the years with little to show for them. The pandemic had narrowed my horizon of possibilities — a gift, really. Picking from the few choices I had on the table at the time, I leaned into polishing my novel, Goddess By The Hour, with the help of the best editor money can buy — Alexandra Shelley.

Alongside the writing and guided by my husband, I began options trading. That experience led to immense gains followed by heavy losses. We have come out on the other side now, burnt but a lot wiser and able to trade with a much saner mindset.

Immortal Thoughts

Development Director

Having mulled over my request to work with him, Naveen invited me to be a part of his company, Immortal Thoughts, as Development Director. What this entails is finding projects for the company to develop and produce. The job is building castles in the air and finding a way to make them real. I love me a "castle in the air," so oh so thankfully, I accepted.

Righteous Kitchen

Angel Investor

I am an angel investor in Righteous Kitchen, a catering and "ready to eat" fresh meals company owned by dear friends. The company is growing and it is so exciting to be a part of that growth.

I'm very aware of the good fortune life has bestowed upon me and my family, and in an effort to share some of it, I support various causes with my skills and/or money. The areas of my focus are women and children, as well as animal and environmental causes.
